The primary advantages of single-acting hydraulic cylinders:

  • They are simple to install.
  • They are economical.
  • They are easy to maintain.

Keeping your single-action hydraulic cylinder in great shape is needed for your machinery to operate as intended. This requires occasionally bleeding air from the system to maintain efficiency.

The following two-step process allows you to simply bleed air from your cylinder to improve its performance.

Step 1: Bringing Air to the Top

To do this, extend the cylinder to its full capacity and let sit for several minutes. This will allow the air to rise to the top.

Step 2: Releasing the Air

To do this, partially close the cylinder and open the bleed valve at the top. This will provide an escape route for the trapped air. Leave the valve open until hydraulic fluid flows out, indicating that the air is fully released. You can then close the valve and continue operating the cylinder as normal.

As hydraulic cylinder manufacturers, we make cylinders for a wide range of applications:

  • For road working and railroads, hydraulic cylinders are designed for high-cycle applications. Typical head styles include an internally threaded gland, or an externally threaded nut for retention in environments where a great deal of vibrations is present.
  • In waste collection/removal or excavation, hydraulic cylinders need to be highly reliable and have a strong longevity. A great amount of engineering needs to go into these cylinders in order to ensure durability and high cycle operation.
  • Hydraulic cylinder requirements for truck cranes range from simple, single-acting steering applications to double counterbalance valves capable of holding a load in the case of a system failure.
  • For material handling, safety is of the utmost importance as the issues needing to be dealt with are as much about the people working in the vicinity as they are about the material being moved.

5 Reasons Welded Hydraulic Cylinders are the Best Choice /5-reasons-welded-hydraulic-cylinders-are-the-best-choice/ Thu, 13 Oct 2022 19:29:56 +0000 /?p=738

Hydraulic cylinders are widely used in construction, agriculture and manufacturing to perform the toughest jobs—requiring that they reliably perform under extraordinary stress.

There are two main types of hydraulic cylinders: tie rod cylinders and welded body cylinders, distinguished by their basic construction.

Tie rod hydraulic cylinders use high-strength threaded steel rods to hold the end caps to the cylinder barrel. Small cylinders typically have four tie rods; larger cylinders can have as many as 20.

By comparison, in welded hydraulic cylinders the ports are welded to the barrel and barrel is welded directly to the end caps.

Here are 5 reasons welded hydraulic cylinders are the best choice, particularly in demanding applications.

  • Welded hydraulic cylinders are easily customizable for specific applications.
  • Welded hydraulic cylinders are easier to maintain. The front rod gland is bolted or threaded into the cylinder barrel, allowing the piston rod assembly and seals to be removed for service.
  • Welded hydraulic cylinders are more rugged by design, making them more reliable and more durable over time.
  • Welded hydraulic cylinders have superior seal packages, which can increase the life of the cylinder if it comes into contact with contaminants or is subject to weather.
  • Welded hydraulic cylinders have lower profiles than tie rod cylinders, making them ideal for applications when space is a factor.

SHC, Inc. is a recognized leader in fabricating custom hydraulic cylinders for any application. The Basics of Custom Hydraulic Cylinders /the-basics-of-custom-hydraulic-cylinders/ /the-basics-of-custom-hydraulic-cylinders/#respond Fri, 19 Aug 2016 09:43:37 +0000 http://www.southhydcyl.com/?p=417 Hydraulic cylinders, or linear hydraulic motors, are mechanical actuators that produce linear forces through pressurized hydraulic fluid. Many stock units are available however custom hydraulic cylinders can be produced individually to your exact specifications. When looking for a manufacturer to design and build your hydraulic cylinders, be sure you partner with one that is dedicated to providing you with quality parts that meet your standards.

At SHC, Inc., the skill of our engineers, craftsmen, and machinists on our team is important to what we provide. We know we can provide you with well designed, quality custom hydraulic cylinders.

How a Hydraulic Cylinder Works
Hydraulic cylinders consist of the following components:

  • cylinder barrel
  • cylinder bottom
  • cylinder head
  • piston rod connection
  • feet for mounting the barrel (occasionally)

The barrel of the cylinder contains a moving piston, which is connected to a piston rod. The cylinder is enclosed by the cylinder bottom and the cylinder head. The piston rod comes off the cylinder head. The piston divides the cylinder into two areas: the piston rod side chamber and the bottom chamber.

Hydraulic cylinders work with hydraulic pumps, which regulate the flow of oil into the system. When the hydraulic oil is pumped into the bottom of the cylinder, the piston rod moves up, which then forces the oil that is in the side chamber back to the reservoir. The hydraulic pressure produced from the movement of the piston rod and oil act on the piston to do linear work.

Choosing the Right Manufacturer is Important
One piece of heavy equipment can use many hydraulic cylinders to function. Therefore, it is imperative that the manufacturer whom you work with is capable of producing quality parts that will function no matter the demands under which they are placed. This is especially true when it comes to custom hydraulic cylinders. Anytime you request custom parts, you want to be sure that the company with which you are working is able to make those parts to your specifications.

At SHC, Inc. we manufacture high-quality hydraulic cylinders with fast turnaround. We are experts at working with our customers to meet their individual needs, and most of our customers stay with us because of the quality and consistency of our work.

The Telescopic Cylinder Takes Lifting to a Whole New Level /the-telescopic-cylinder-takes-lifting-to-a-whole-new-level/ /the-telescopic-cylinder-takes-lifting-to-a-whole-new-level/#respond Tue, 09 Aug 2016 13:16:26 +0000 http://www.southhydcyl.com/?p=413 The telescopic cylinder has a distinct advantage over other hydraulic cylinders. It can provide an extremely long stroke from a relatively compact, initial source. Comprised of several cylinders that are built inside one another, these cylinders are extremely popular. When the cylinders collapse or expand, they look much like a telescope. They are typically constructed as two types: single-acting and double-acting. Special designs can be built for specific applications. The system uses hydraulic pressure to extend each cylinder housed in the unit.

Typical Applications

The telescopic cylinder is commonly used in construction equipment. Dump trucks are an excellent example. The cylinder makes it possible to lift equipment at various angles as the length of the telescope extends. Other construction applications include forklifts, cranes, excavators, roll off trucks, and oil drilling rigs. These all represent challenging situations that only this type of hydraulic lifting system can solve.

Featured benefits include:

  • Construction that is re-buildable
  • Vee Packings that are both high-quality and adjustable
  • Cross Tube or Trunnion mounting styles
  • Stages made of hard chrome plated metal

At Southern Hydraulic, we design and build telescopes that are above 2500 psi ratings. However, telescopes can be built that are less than 2500 psi if a customer specifically requests it. When the extension has to originate from a tight or narrow space, there is not a better solution that provides such powerful lifting results. Long strokes are achieved while collapse lengths are relatively small.

Custom Built Telescopic Cylinder

We can build high-quality telescopes by employing state-of-the-art equipment that is operated by highly trained professionals who know their trade. Hydraulic cylinders are used in a wide range of industries that also include oil and gas, turf equipment, waste and recycling, snow and ice control, forestry and logging, material handling, military and government, fire and rescue, earth moving, concrete and asphalt, auto hauling equipment, aerospace and agriculture.

Hydraulics is a force moves things upward. Without continual innovations and businesses dedicated to solving industrial solutions, the world would be quite a different place. This is why companies like SHC, Inc. exist. Think of it as enhancing the function of many things—one hydraulic cylinder at a time.
