A linear actuator is an electric motor operating in a straight-line motion as opposed to the standard circular motion. These cylinders allow you to enhance the productivity — in terms of speed and force — of various types of industrial projects. At Southern Hydraulics, we maintain an extensive selection of telescopic hydraulic cylinders in several various sizes to meet your specific applications.

Applications

Whether you select a single acting or double acting cylinder design, you can utilize these devices in various types of equipment, including construction equipment such as roll-off/roll-on trucks, transfer trailers, garbage trucks, and dump trucks. They can also be applied to common machinery and agricultural equipment.

If you need to upgrade your agricultural equipment, often the small-bore design which is best suited for light duty applications can accommodate your requirements. Very often, telescopic cylinders with a small-bore design are not powered by hydraulics, but rather compressed air. If your project involves heavy duty applications, a hydraulic telescopic cylinder is the best choice.

Advantages

What are the specific advantages of using telescopic cylinders? To provide an answer, it is necessary to define the distinctions between double-acting, single-acting, and single/double acting combination cylinders. The double-acting cylinders retract and extend in both directions. They are quite complex in design but highly efficient for various applications. Single acting cylinders extend in a single direction and then the weight of the load, along with gravity, will collapse the cylinder – they comprise an efficient and simple design. The cylinders enable equipment and machinery, for instance dump trucks, to complete tasks in a seamless manner while easily handling adjustments in overall weight distribution and internal friction.

You can easily select a telescopic cylinder that allows for a single/double acting combination – something that is often needed in drill rig operations. This combination design gives you benefits of a double-acting cylinder with the cost-effectiveness and straightforward operation of a single-acting cylinder.

Increasing Your Reach With A Custom Telescopic Cylinder /increasing-your-reach-with-a-custom-telescopic-cylinder/ /increasing-your-reach-with-a-custom-telescopic-cylinder/#respond Fri, 02 Feb 2018 10:36:42 +0000 http://www.southhydcyl.com/?p=504 At SHC, Inc., we specialize in custom welded hydraulic cylinders. Unlike some companies, we focus exclusively on single acting cylinders, which allows us to offer our customers top quality, fast turnaround times and options to customize all the cylinders we make.

One of our specializations is working with Original Equipment Manufacturers or individuals needing custom or standard types of telescopic cylinder designs. There are several advantages to using these cylinders that are well worth considering when designing equipment or when replacing an existing cylinder reaching the end of its life cycle.

Rod Cylinder and Telescopic Cylinder Differences

Both the standard or rod cylinders and the telescopic cylinders we offer are welded cylinders. This allows for a narrower, more streamlined cylinder that doesn’t have the external tie rods and that can tolerate higher pressures and more demanding work environments.

The big difference between the two is the length of the cylinder required to give the necessary lift. With the standard type of cylinder, the length of the barrel is the maximum stroke length of the cylinder, which limits the amount of lift that can be accomplished.

With the telescopic cylinder, sections of the cylinder nest within each other, allowing the stroke to be substantially longer than the length of the cylinder body. This can be maximized by carefully designing the telescoping segments or sections to bear the necessary weight at an angle, allowing for even more lift.

A good example of this would be the telescopic cylinder seen on a gravel truck or a dump truck. The bed has to be raised to a maximum height to allow the material in the bed to slide down and out. Looking closely at the cylinders will show they are typically mounted on about a 60% angle with the telescopic design to allow the necessary height to the top of the bed while also allowing the weight of the bed to collapse the cylinder after use.

Two Types of Telescopic Cylinder: Which do I need? /two-types-of-telescopic-cylinder-which-do-i-need/ /two-types-of-telescopic-cylinder-which-do-i-need/#respond Fri, 05 Jan 2018 09:43:01 +0000 http://www.southhydcyl.com/?p=496 Engineers in almost all of the world’s industries require hydraulic cylinders capable of providing sufficient force to move huge loads. You can choose from one of several hydraulic power options however, if you need to apply force in a small space, the most satisfactory type is the telescopic cylinder. It offers the capabilities of performing its tasks optimally while being both durable and capable of customization to suit a specific purpose. At SHC, Inc., our engineers and technicians will work with you to ensure you understand your options, including what type of telescopic cylinders will prove to be the most effective and efficient.

Types of Telescopic Cylinders

At SHC, Inc.s, we offer two types of telescopic cylinders. These are single – and double-acting. Each design offers specific advantages; both types are suitable for fitting into tight spaces. They both feature a telescopic design consisting of several – at most six, stages, each fitting compactly into the other.

  1. Single-Acting Telescopic Cylinders: This, the most common type of telescopic cylinder, is also the most simplistic in design. The extension of the device is achieved through hydraulic pressure. The extraction occurs through the employment of such external forces as gravity.
  2. Double-Acting Telescopic Cylinders: This double-acting telescopic cylinder operates in a similar fashion. Hydraulic pressure extends it. However, when it comes to retraction, not gravity but hydraulic forces cause it to perform this action. This makes it a more complex design.

Choosing a Telescopic Cylinder

If you want a longer reach but also must place it within a confined space, you should consider a telescopic cylinder. It performs optimally where a rod-cylinder cannot. With the ability to extend further, it is the ideal hydraulic cylinder for such heavy-duty equipment as dump trucks, excavators, and garbage trucks. To talk about this as a solution, call our experienced staff at SHC, Inc.. We can help you discover whether this option can prove to be advantageous for your company and its machinery.

The Importance Of The Design Phase In A Custom Telescopic Cylinder /the-importance-of-the-design-phase-in-a-custom-telescopic-cylinder/ /the-importance-of-the-design-phase-in-a-custom-telescopic-cylinder/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2017 09:04:30 +0000 http://www.southhydcyl.com/?p=456 All standard types of hydraulic cylinders have a limitation in their ability to be used in applications where an extended stroke length is required. This is the simple fact that the overall size of the cylinder is limited to the specific application or equipment and, since the rod is a single, solid piece, this limits the lift, push, pull or lower ability.

The answer to that problem is addressed through a telescopic cylinder. This is a particular design that allows the rod to be divided into sections fit into each other, largest at the outside to smallest on the inside.

As hydraulic fluid is pumped into the cylinder on a single acting telescopic cylinder the sections of the rod, known as the stages, extend to create the lift or push. The largest section of the rod, moves first, followed by each subsequent stage until the last and smallest in diameter.

The Load Capacity

Designing a telescopic cylinder is an extremely precise engineering task. The length of the extended telescoping rod has to be carefully considered in relationship to the weight of the load to provide enough rigidity to prevent bending.

Incorrect design of the stages or the wrong load capacity rating for these types of cylinders will dramatically decrease their life and increase damage to the cylinder in typical use.

The Single Action Advantage

With the vast majority of applications, the best option for operating the cylinder is single action. This is our specialization at SHC, Inc. and it is extremely effective with the telescopic models. The use of the single acting cylinder not only cuts costs to manufacture the cylinder but reduces the need to run two hydraulic lines while also decreasing the amount of maintenance required once the cylinder is installed. The only necessity when using the single action telescopic is that there must be enough weight to allow gravity to compress the cylinder once the push or stroke is complete.

What You Get When You Order a Custom Telescopic Cylinder /what-you-get-when-you-order-a-custom-telescopic-cylinder/ /what-you-get-when-you-order-a-custom-telescopic-cylinder/#respond Mon, 29 May 2017 09:48:47 +0000 http://www.southhydcyl.com/?p=450 At SHC, Inc., we won’t just sell you a telescopic cylinder; we will actually build one to your specifications. We have our own line of cylinders which we have been manufacturing in our own facility for over 25 years.

This makes a very real difference for our customers. We assure full quality control at each step of the process from the design and specifications of the cylinder through to the actual manufacturing and testing. With this in-house control over the process, our cylinders are designed and built to last, outperforming many of our competitor’s cylinders.

Designing Our Cylinders

With our approach to providing telescopic cylinder designs for a wide variety of industries and applications, we can customize the cylinder to your needs. To help us create the perfect cylinder for your needs, there are several factors we will need to know.

A telescoping cylinder will fit any type of application where there is a need for a long stroke but a small cylinder size, which is also known as the cylinder profile. The use of the telescoping design of the rod can provide between 20 and 40% extension over a solid rod in a cylinder. This adds an extra 20 to 40% lift or push range without having to create a long cylinder that wouldn’t be practical.

The length of the telescopic cylinder is a factor of the weight (load capacity) as well as the bore size and the pounds per square inch (PSI) for system. By talking with you personally, our design engineers can fully understand the requirements of the cylinder and provide the right design to stand up to the job.

We also offer both cross tube and trunnion mounts, allowing flexibility in the design of the system. These cylinders will also feature hard chrome plate on all stages, which adds to the long life and smooth operation of all of our standard and custom telescopic cylinders.
