Tips For Getting The Correct Replacement Hydraulic Cylinder

Not everyone using equipment, machines or systems that utilize hydraulics is an expert in buying replacement components. To help our customers, the team at SHC, Inc. has put together a list of helpful tips to ensure your order for a replacement hydraulic cylinder will be correct.

It is important to realize that many of the types of cylinders used on specialized equipment are not standard cylinder sizes. While there are some cylinders that are more of a universal fit, for specific load capacity, sizes and mount options we can create a custom replacement cylinder that will be fully compatible with the existing system components.

Type of Cylinder

There are several different types of hydraulic cylinders used for various applications. There are standard cylinders that have an extended length slightly shorter than the body of the cylinder. The rod that extends from the cylinder is one solid piece.

Telescopic cylinders use smaller, shorter pieces to form the rod and extend the cylinder stroke. Each piece of the rod, known as stage, sits in the largest piece of the rod known as the barrel or the main. This allows a longer stroke for the cylinder.

Single or Double Acting

There are also single or double acting options for a hydraulic cylinder. At SHC, Inc. we can manufacture single acting cylinders, which means there is one hydraulic connection at the base of the cylinder.

The hydraulic fluid, under pressure, is pumped through the hose to the cylinder to push the rod up and out of the cylinder. The weight of the equipment or the load is used to retract the rod and push the liquid out of the cylinder at the same time.

With a double-acting hydraulic cylinder, there are two connections, one at the top and one at the bottom. The hydraulic system is used to control both extension and retraction of the rod.

Finally, to make sure you get the correct replacement cylinder, be sure to verify all measurements before placing your order. If you aren’t sure about the measurements, contact our team, and we will ensure you have the right information on your order.
