How a Hydraulic Cylinder Works
Hydraulic cylinders consist of the following components:
- cylinder barrel
- cylinder bottom
- cylinder head
- piston rod connection
- feet for mounting the barrel (occasionally)
The barrel of the cylinder contains a moving piston, which is connected to a piston rod. The cylinder is enclosed by the cylinder bottom and the cylinder head. The piston rod comes off the cylinder head. The piston divides the cylinder into two areas: the piston rod side chamber and the bottom chamber.
Hydraulic cylinders work with hydraulic pumps, which regulate the flow of oil into the system. When the hydraulic oil is pumped into the bottom of the cylinder, the piston rod moves up, which then forces the oil that is in the side chamber back to the reservoir. The hydraulic pressure produced from the movement of the piston rod and oil act on the piston to do linear work.
